Nobody was more stunned by Spitzer’s vice than his staff

ALBANY — Over the years, Eliot Spitzer often showed his staff new photographs of his wife. In public, the couple held hands.

At night on the road, aides recalled, Spitzer was on the phone, helping his three teenage daughters with their homework.

Aides who pointed out a pretty woman walking by in the Capitol were quickly rebuked, told to grow up and think about their work.

When office talk digressed into rumors of state officials having extramarital affairs, Spitzer appeared shocked.

“That’s appalling,” he said to an aide, expressing his moral outrage. “Do you think that could be true?”

So when Eliot Spitzer, whose political career rose by accusing others of behaving unethically as well as criminally, last week was toppled because of his involvement with a prostitution ring, those closest to him thought they were dreaming.

Gov. Spitzer Situation in New York Has Broadwater Implications in Connecticut

Political insiders are wondering how long Gov. Eliot Spitzer will last in office following a prostitution scandal that was plastered all over the front pages Tuesday of every New York newspaper.

The scandal made front-page news in Connecticut, too, but the state has an even broader interest regarding the future of the controversial Broadwater liquefied natural gas proposal in Long Island Sound. Rather, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday that Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s troubles began with a federal money-laundering probe.

Prosecutors unsealed an affidavit that details a rendezvous in a Washington hotel room between a prostitute and “Client 9,” who a source with knowledge of the case said Monday was Spitzer.

Spitzer, who has not been charged with any crime, stood beside his wife, Silda, on Monday, apologizing to his family without specifically mentioning accusations of a romp with a high-dollar prostitute.
